NIN Showing Some Radiohead Love.

by User ImageAmbient Decay on March 13th, 2008

When artist’s get pissed, they always seem to find a way to make their statement not only heard, but they show their point with flying colors. So far two artists have shown their distaste for the major record labels who like to rip-off their fans. So normally when a big name band throws a fit and makes sense, the less heard bands will normally hop on the band-wagon and follow suite not only to show that they love their fans as well, but add support to the bigger band.

In this particular case, it’s the other way around in a way. Radiohead’s “Name-your-price” download strategy for their latest album “In Rainbows” has been a huge hit and been the talk of the music scene for a few months now.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails made available a new four-part album, “Ghosts I-IV,” containing 36 instrumental tracks spanning nearly two hours. The music was made available in five configurations at five price levels, ranging from free (for downloads of nine songs) to $300 (for a box set that includes two CDs, a DVD, an optical disc containing a slide show and four vinyl albums). He did this because the major record labels are price gouging. Last year he also urged consumers to steal his final Interscope album, “Year Zero,” because it was overpriced.

During this statement it seemed that the NIN.com servers crashed even though they anticipated a rather large traffic surge. Reznor wrote to his fans this simple message pertaining to the server problems:

“Because we know how devoted our fans are, we planned for an overwhelming response, and expected heavy traffic. To our surprise, the traffic was more than three times what we anticipated, and has only been getting heavier throughout the day. The response has been absolutely phenomenal, and we couldn’t be happier, but our servers have taken a beating, causing numerous problems with the download site.”

That takes some rather large kahuna’s and I respect that in Reznor and Radiohead for doing such a loud and in-your-face maneuver at the record labels.

As Always, Here is A Fix.
