Kraftwerk: The Industrial Lars?
Swedish synth duo Audio Objekt’s cover of Kraftwerk’s “Computer World” has been banned by Kraftwerk’s publishing representative in Germany. As a result the single has been taken out of distribution, physically and digitally. Audio Objekt has also been forced to remove all audio files from www.audioobjekt.com web site, Myspace, YouTube page, as well as their Facebook profile.
Next to the “Computer World” song, the album also included the single “Modellen“, a Swedish translation of “Das Model”. Krafwerk has always kept a very keen eye on the covers that are being released. Yet unlike other bands, they do not automatically allow covers to be made. In the past also the “Krafty Move” album fell under the spell of Kraftwerk and was yanked. (Except on Ebay!)
Now I understand if Audio Objekt wanted to do a cover of a song and it is done quite often in the industrial genre. After all that is what aids in making this music so damn addicting! This still slightly pisses me off since so many people in this genre do remixes… it’s like a way of saying to another band who came out with the song first “Hey man, this song kicks ass… here’s my take on it, what do you think?”
On the other hand, if Audio Objekt, didn’t have express permission (which it sounds like they didn’t) to produce a remix of a song, then I can understand Kraftwerk’s actions… slightly. The band could have worked a deal out instead of being a kill joy and yanking the whole damn thing. It also sounds like Audio Object remixed a whole CD instead of just a song.. and that does seem kind of fishy and sneaky.
Since not a whole plethora of details have been released, if these weren’t any of the cases, then well, I guess every genre has their Lars somewhere in it.
As Always, Here is A Fix.
